Do you pick them because of their meaning, or because of how they sound, or what..?

I tend to mix and match from various books or just make them up off the top of my head.

Making them up is a common one for me.

As is using different languages. Eg. I want a young, strong lad or some such. Translate 'strong' or similar words into a language that has the sort of sound you want. Easy.

Yes and then you get characters that are called Chair in japanese or something :P

To be honest it's hit and miss for me. I sometimes just merge two or three names together, use a normal one and just mess around with the surname.

And sometimes I even look for a meaning of the name.

As a general rule, I tend to merge various words/phrases from various languages [Latin and Chinese makes for some interesting combinations] I know or do what Fei does.

Surnames have always been hard for me, so I tend to go here and flick through.

If I'm looking for first names, I'll just bug people on MSN to give me names, or visit here and here for ideas. (male and female, in that order)

That generally does the trick for me...

Background specific characteristics or national birthplace for names of characters for me primarily.

Sometimes I pay homage to some writer's that have inspired me and a bit of mix and match too.

First names I'll usually try and make up myself, or I'll get them from other books, a lot of names in the Warhammer books are great to use, really.
Name generators are a great help, as well.

There's a bunch of them out there. Need an Elvish name, look for an Elvish name generator. Need something Star Wars like? A Star Wars name generator!
