After a long time in construction, the Gundam statue in the Odaiba sector of Tokyo. Gundam is a very powerful and influential anime there, and there have been monuments for them here and there, but this easily takes the cake. It was built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of the original series (using the first suit shown), as well as to "liven" up Japan in preparation for their 2016 Olympics bid.

It is 1:1 scale and stands at 18 meters (or ~59-60 ft for my fellow Americans).

Voltron came a few years after Gundam did, it helped to partially influence future mecha designs. That said there was some mecha before them.

As for the cost, I'm not sure, but it probably cost a bit. It'll be up for "public" viewing for a while before it is moved into a theme park or something.

Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Mekanda, And Grendaizer there was one named Balatac(unconfirmed haven't seen it but older kids than me swore blind to it.)to be exact. All vintage 70's mecha.

And all were banned from being shown on local T.V by our local tin-pot dictator Ferdinand Marcos during his reign.

Yea, Gundam was a very popular series in Japan, gaining the reputation things like Disney and Warner Brothers have here.

Most Americans were only exposed to them in the late 80s and 90s though, and most of them were watered down and edited for childrens to market things.

I like how it looks at night. Pretty cool. Too bad they didn't actually build a huge, fully functional robot. But I guess that might work as a scare crow for Godzilla.
